Is it a liquid? Is it a gas?

Great example of supercritical fluids in action by acclaimed chemistry professor Martyn Poliakoff.

No.

It's a dense phase fluid. It's a tricky issue for engineers working on CO2 re-injection. The geological formations are at such a depth that the CO2 has to be compressed from its gaseous state to the dense phase in order to get it into the formation. The density changes suddenly (see NIST graph).

What kind of machine is needed?

Is it a pump? Is it a compressor?

NIST CO2 props
