I would be grateful if one of you could help me resolve an issue being debated on another forum, specifically concerning possible evolutions for lithotrophs.

-Is there any reason for a lithotrophic organism (specifically an iron-oxidizing one) to become colonial in areas in which no high concentrations are found?

-How long would it take, if the niche was empty, for a lithotrophic organism to become heterotrophic?

-What compounds posses the ability to be used in metabolism by lithotrophic organisms?

-Is there any advantage for a colonial lithotroph in areas with high mineral concentration to become specialized?

Any help would be appreciated, the project can be found at Sagan4.com.
