Where ever you stand on global warming you just got to love it when someone goes after the Hollywood left.

Put up or shut up on global warming

Dingell puts a fair price tag on the high cost of saving energy

The Detroit News

Quote:
Fighting global warming isn't so much fun now, is it? When the battle targeted almost exclusively Detroit's auto industry, volunteers were falling all over themselves to sign up.

But now it's about to hit closer to home for most Americans. U.S. Rep. John Dingell, the Dearborn Democrat who chairs the Energy and Commerce Committee, is proposing a 50-cent tax on a gallon of gasoline and suspension of mortgage deductions for what he calls McMansions -- homes over 3,000 square feet.

Dingell continues to press the point that if we believe global warming is so serious a threat that it's worth destroying the automobile industry, then it's also worth spreading the pain to as many other places as possible.

His proposal is aimed at the Hollywood hypocrites who testify before Congress about the evils of the auto industry and then fly private jets back to their 30,000-square-foot hillside palaces. If the smug global warming warriors who park their Priuses in four-car garages want to cram everyone else into wheeled shoe boxes, then they should be willing to bed down in cracker boxes.

About damn time someone suggested that. Al Gore anyone?

Global warming should be thrown out already. We're experiencing severe climate change shifts, not severe warming. Data shows we are regularly hitting record highs for not only COLD weather, but WARM weather and humidity, combined with many other factors about the climate that I don't understand because I'm not a climatologist...

Anyway. Climate change. Not global warming. Damn ignorant congress.

Well... not that nomenclature really matters... climate change is probably the better term, but "global warming" is not wrong if you know what it stands for. On a global average the amount of heat is rapidly increasing, although locally the effects may vary. The problem with the term "climate change" is a political one: It sounds too cute and inconsequential to be taken seriously by the average Joe.

I like your expression "climate change shift", though. Wink

That's true. If you were you would realise that global warming is necessarily accompanied by increases in the extremity of weather.

It's easy to poke at what someone else says, but not very easy to present a coherent opinion.

So please, oph, why not grace us with your flawless view?

Despite the car I drive, I do have some room to talk because mine still registers as an ULEV.

Anywho, if we're on the subject of cars, why isn't the government blasting people for buying these huge vehicles, like H2 and suburbans?

I'm all for freedom to buy and drive whatever you want, but it seems to me that if you want to drive a big huge gas guzzler that's choking down gas and chugging out emissions, you should pay dearly for it.

Have you seen gas-guzzler taxes? They're a joke.

I have to pay a premium to own a luxury car, and if I can't afford that, I don't get a luxury car. Even though there's two wholly different market events going on between the two, if you want to have that monstrous vehicle that does 8mpg highway, you should have to pay that huge premium for it, too.

At the same time, however, there isn't much incentive to buy a clean car, either, and there should be some kind of drive from somewhere to make fuel-efficient and clean cars more appealing. No self respecting muscle car owner, for instance, is gonna sell his brute for an electric car. VroomVroomZoom for WhineWhinePutPut? You must be joking.

There...I've bloody gotten off topic already! *sigh*... Razz

But there hasn't been extremes. 1998 was not the hottest year on record as touted. The temperatures have been revised. 1930 was. Most of the top ten hottest years happened before 1950.

Edit: it was 1934. Only three of the top 10 are in the last decade. Four of the top ten are in the 1930's.

Edit2: Wasn't this the time of the dust bowl?

Yet this data belong to the USA only; they're not talking about global measurements. I bet global means will stay roughly the same.

Here is a good post on the issue, from a reputable source:

http://www.realclimate.org/index.php/archives/category/climate-science/instrumental-record/

And here's the new and corrected graph:

Anomaly stays roughly the same.
