How safe is it to burn charcoal lighter fluid inside the home to start a fire-place over the long-term [as in every time you start it, you use the fluid]?
I imagine is not very safe, but I can't convince my dad it's not.
This is in a stove fireplace which has a door [which is not completely sealed evidently].
Here are the effects from swallowing it:

I can only imagine it's not much better from inhaling for a couple of seasons every year.

Benzene is carcinogenic. Petroleum refiners are spending millions to remove it from gasoline because of the risk of cancer from inhaling the fumes. If the lighter fluid has benzene in it (I don't know) I would not use it in my house.

Man, I wouldn't use that stinky stuff to light the barbecue outdoors. I have one of these. It works great.

Humans have been huddling around awfully smokey fires in cramped quarters so long, we've probably developed some tolerance. Air pollution was "natural" until quite recently. Like until central heating. If you want to eliminate all carcinogens now I can't argue with that. Just my perspective.
