I imagine is not very safe, but I can't convince my dad it's not. This is in a stove fireplace which has a door [which is not completely sealed evidently]. Petroleum refiners are spending millions to remove it from gasoline because of the risk of cancer from inhaling the fumes. If the lighter fluid has benzene in it (I don't know) I would not use it in my house. Air pollution was "natural" until quite recently. Like until central heating. If you want to eliminate all carcinogens now I can't argue with that.
