I'm curious to know if anyone has done any work on the effects on gravitational force in the universe and how it may distort perceptions of space/time (distance) in regard to earth/near-earth observations. In other words, could it be that our understanding of distance in the universe has been distorted by the gravitational influence on the fabric of space?

As a disclaimer I am a humanities professor who has an interest in theoretical physics, but only limited experience in praxis (I couldn't cut it in differential equations and I never made it past sophomore-level astronomy courses).
