How manny of you think that is posible and how do you think is posible? _________________ Solomon Grundy
In 1944, this creature rose from the swamp, with tremendous strength and some dormant memories that for example allowed him to speak English, but not knowing what he was, and not remembering Cyrus Gold or his fate. Wandering throughout the swamp, he encountered two escaped criminals, killed them, and took their clothes. When they asked him his name, he simply muttered that he had been born on Monday. Reminded of an old nursery rhyme about a man born on Monday, the thugs named the creature "Solomon Grundy". |

Possible.
The requirements are drive, initiative, ruthlessness and luck.
Alternatively, possess none of these things, but start out with one hundred billion dollars. _________________ The Universe is not only weirder than we imagine it is weirder than we can imagine. J.B.S.Haldane. |

SG; Your thread question was, "is it possible?" and the short answer, not only possible but this has been done hundreds of times in world history, especially when wealth in todays dollars/pounds/euro/etc is considered.
The latest big story would be those two Russians (in USA), who had an idea, using the Internet to sell advertising while allowing research. The founders of Google were worth Billions in far less that 15 years and now over 30 billion each.
As willmer said; Just come up with an idea which can be merchandised. Thats not hard in the US, since our government encourages wealth, to the point of assistance if in the national interest. Today, that could be in Nanotechnology, Medicine or a variety of alternative energy fields.
You can also receive grants from Business, Educational Institutions or a host of private speculators in many other fields, just based on your ideas.
By the way, service industries are just as viable as a product.
Couple ideas, maybe in Artificial Gravity or CO2 containment. |

What you say is true, but in many cases the picture is much worse. World Markets in general have lost 1/5th (20%) their value this month. Many companies have lost much more and world wide were talking in Trillions of dollars, pounds or euro's. Financial institutions, such as Citi-group wrote off billions in bad debt, but lost much more in the value of their company...
Yes, probably the tide will turn and most feel in this year, at least to the point of 1-1-08. Some will, and have, gone under and other will be bought by like companies. Investing to make large amounts of money, is not always the best idea. Warren Buffett, the biggest exception made Berkshire Hathaway investors some good profits, but by buying/selling companies or at least a controlling share of those companies. Hedge funds have taken this to another step, actually betting on a decline in value via options, but few individuals have gained large estates, simply investing. IMO. |
