Hi all, as I'm sure I dont have to spell out, I'm new here..
My question is simply this: How many times, when seeking scientific facts to you find yourselves bombarded with half truths, misinterpretations and self indulging answers, from people who clearly have nothing better to do than tell the world how good they are, or how stupid other people are for asking a dumb question?
If chemistry is something we all have a passion for; and I should hope so ,being involved in a chemistry forum, why do some people feel it unavoidably nessessary to belittle others?
Finaly I arrive at my point...Do cocky, unforgiving scientists deserve adulation?
Does a tendancy to alienate people lead to an elite?
Cold this elite be better or worse by dismissal of those more niave than themselves?
Is science an 'old boys' club, and if so, should it be?

Congratulations, in a thread entitled "Chemistry, Politics and Pseudo-science" you have managed to aviod talking about any of them.
So you're a bit hacked off about some people having egos and letting you know about it, Although it's a forum it's lodged in the real world where this sort of thing is common, get over it. Forums are generally not some touchy-feely Cosmo-community, mind you compared to some forums I post on this one could be could be considered serene and genteel.
I sometimes lose it with posters who can't be bothered to use a search engine, or if they do, don't read the results, and just post a request for explanations instead. These types of assignments are set by teachers in order to improve the students search skills just as much as the retrieving information for the end product. However, because they regard searching as "Boring" they try to shortcut the process. Try shortcutting in the real world and there are a myriad of possible endings inluding (but not limited to) injury, death, prison and or loss of employment.

Indeed. I'm often amazed by how people will post questions that they should be able to find answers for in about two minutes on google. It often seems like writing out a post and waiting for a reply would surely be far more work than just looking up the relevant information.
Unfortunately the vast majority of stuff that gets posted in the chemistry forum here just isn't very interesting. I have a passion for chemistry, but I don't have a passion for helping people do their homework or answering random trivia questions. That's why I don't usually post much here. Half the time I only seem to post corrections to incorrect things other people are saying (and even them, only if it's a marginally-interesting topic). |

I'm new here too, and I've noticed that the threads in the Chemistry forum are not interesting. What sort of threads would be interesting? Are you looking for important in-depth discussion of the latest research? Or maybe issues that are related to chemistry?
I'm looking forward to being involved in some interesting discussions about Chemistry.
