Many probably know that we're born when an egg cell is fertilized, and after a long series of processes become a homo sapien.
However, cells themselves are alive, so the egg and sperm cell were both alive, the only difference they really have with us is that we appear to be "conscious," and think for ourselves. Cells, not so much.
So my question is this: If we are only a copy of a cell, which was a copy of a call, etc. all made by cellular division, wouldn't we be able to deduce that we've technically been alive for billions, maybe trillions of years, living as a cell until we finally were merged with another cell and gained "consciousness"?
And though our consciousness, soul, whatever you want to call it, eventually leaves our body, if we gave birth to another human, our body continues to live as long as more offspring are born.
It'd be nice if someone could contradict my views, there's nothing I can't learn without a good contradiction. |

| Technically the person you become is due to your environment and your genetics. The sperm and egg, each contained half of the genetic material which was used to create you. So, even though you came from those haploid cells, they did not have the same genetic make up as you. Just as the sperm/eggs you would produce would only have half of your genome. So, an individual begins with the fertilization and ends with their death. |

True about the individual, but their cells don't necessarily start with fertilization.
So I guess you really only become part of a new person, but lose yourself. But you're still alive.  |
