There is a series of recurring short stories published in different compilations about a group of stereotypical British middle aged men. They periodically come together in a pub and inevitably one of them comes up with a story and then each one of the gentlemen take a turn trying to find a solution or explanation. Each solution is more interesting and deliciously British than the next. Then, finally, they cannot come up with an answer and then, the punch line, their waiter that has been listening all along and after being treated as just another waiter, steps up and gives the answer to the puzzle that the gentlemen have been after the whole evening. I cannot for the life of me remember what the stories were called or who the author was; although I have some idea that it might have been Asimov or Aldiss. Has any of you guys read these stories? I’d like to run a search on the internet and see if I can find some of them. _________________ "Gullibility kills" - Carl Sagan
This sounds vaguely like a story or two by Azimov. I don't recall it as being British, but certainly a group of bachelors who meet in a cludb (British establisment style) setting. I'll look through my azimov collection in the next day or two and report back if I find anything.
It doesn't sounds like Aldiss: two lighthearted for him. _________________ The Universe is not only weirder than we imagine it is weirder than we can imagine. J.B.S.Haldane.
